In 1735, this sofa designed for a Polish nobleman by the most influential decorator of the day, Juste Aurèle Meissonnier, was the most famous piece of furniture in Europe. It was put on display in the Tuileries Palace in Paris in the first ever public design show.

The reporter for the Mercure de France concluded that the Bieli´nski ensemble “will bring to Poland a most favorable idea of the progress of the fine arts in France.” He might have added that the mixed-media installation, in which painting, sculpture, architecture, and furniture design were given equal weight, would help demonstrate to a new audience a fact of which Parisians were already well aware: by 1735, interior decoration was poised to become a force to be reckoned with; it was beginning to take on an identity independent from architecture and was about to become what we call a field.
